Gravity field recovery from geodetic altimeter missions

چکیده
Satellite radar altimetry collected during a number of geodetic missions has provided new understanding the topography and tectonics deep oceans. As altimeter performance coverage improves, smaller structures are revealed. Here we investigate contribution six that have been placed into mapping phases for more than one year. Two types evaluations performed. We first compare composite (all altimeters) grids east north vertical deflection to matching where omitted evaluate their versus latitude. then estimate noise in each by computing median absolute deviation profiles with best grid. Both analyses show SARAL/AltiKa provides greatest ERS-1 no longer any significant improvement. The major limitation recovering small scale gravity features is sea surface roughness from ocean waves. There steady improvements instrumentation processing methods will continue future higher frequency radars interferometric swath altimeters planned missions.

Retracking ERS-1 altimeter waveforms for optimal gravity field recovery
S U M M A R Y We have reprocessed ERS-1 radar altimeter waveforms using an algorithm designed to minimize sea surface slope error and decouple it from significant wave height (SWH) error. Standard waveform retracking estimates three parameters—arrival time, SWH and amplitude. We show that errors in retracked estimates of arrival time and SWH are inherently correlated because of the noise charac...
متن کاملGravity Field Analysis from the Satellite Missions CHAMP and GOCE
This work describes global gravity field modeling from observations of the CHAMP and the GOCE satellite mission. In the case of CHAMP the so-called Energy Balance Approach is applied to measurements of GPS high-low tracking of the low orbiting CHAMP spacecraft. In the case of GOCE gravity gradiometry is the main observable. The experience gained processing real data of the CHAMP satellite missi...
متن کاملValidation Concepts for Gravity Field Models from New Satellite Missions
The new satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE will provide significantly improved global gravity field information in terms of quality and spatial resolution. In order to quantify the quality of these gravity field models independently from the estimation procedure, new validation concepts are necessary using external information. Validation requires the processing of selected level 3 produc...
متن کاملRetracking Jason-1 Altimeter Waveforms for Marine Gravity Recovery
In order to construct improved maps of marine gravity anomalies, we have developed and tested retracking methods for determining sea surface slopes from radar altimeter return waveforms collected by the Jason-1 mission. The accuracy of marine gravity models derived from satellite altimetry depends mainly on two factors: first, the density of ground tracks covered by the mission, and second, the...
متن کاملGeodetic Satellite Altimeter Study Final Engineering Report
This report presents the results of an eight-month study of signal processing techniques applicable to the Geodetic Satellite Altimeter program. The first subject treated is the analysis of random errors in the altitude measurement process which arise from signal fluctuations and receiver noise. Results are presented based on both theoretical analyses and computer simulation of the altimeter co...
